Creating a buzz: Scarborough beekeepers with 130 years' service between them earn awards
Scarborough and District Beekeepers’ Association has presented long service awards to three of its members who have, between them, clocked up 130 years’ service.
The awards were presented to Dr Henry Kaye, who has given 50 years’ service, Ian Danby (40 years) and Ron Smith (40).
The association is active in promoting bees and beekeepers across all ages and holds annual events with the Dawny Estate each year involving more than 200 schoolchildren from around the area.
This year’s event will be held at the Dawny Estate on Thursday April 23, from 9am to 2pm.

Scarborough and District Beekeepers' Association has been running for more than 50 years.
It is affiliated to the national British Beekeepers’ Association and the Yorkshire Beekeepers’ Association.
It is a friendly and welcoming group of people sharing a common passion in all things to do with bees.
The association aims to enjoy, encourage, improve and advance apiculture in Scarborough and the surrounding district.

Honeybees are under increased threat from climate change, viruses, parasites, pesticides and chemicals, and from a loss of their natural habitat.
Bees are responsible for the pollination of around 80% of food products.
The group holds specific association meetings during winter and summer.
In summer, it holds meetings at the apiaries of members while in winter, the beekeepers retreat to the warmth for a series of informative talks, social events and an annual Honey Show.

Secretary Alan Yarker said: “A key aim of the association is education, not just new, but all beekeepers.
“In beekeeping, you never stop learning and thanks to being a part of the YBKA & BBKA, there is always up-to-date information available.”
