Mary, who began doing the papers when she ran the village post office, said: “I had the Post Office when the bairns were little and I ran it for 32 years until I took early retirement.”

“Menzies at York would deliver the Yorkshire Post and I’d sort them out and put them in the box, the ones in the village I’d deliver myself.”

It’s something that Mary kept doing after the post office closed, until she finally decided to pack her newsbag for the last time on Saturday December 21.

When asked why she had decided to retire, Mary said: “I’m tired of getting up at 7 in the morning and sorting them all out. I shall miss doing it, but I think it’s time to give up now.”
