The main Whitby Krampus Run event is due to take place on December 7 and 8.
It is an interpretation of the Alpine festive tradition where, on the feast of St Nicholas, the good saint bearing gifts is accompanied by a horned creature the Krampus allowed to punish the wicked.
Organisers Elaine Edmunds and Laurence Mitchell said: “This came about in Whitby from our keen interest in comparative folklore and from alternative themed life drawing sessions at La Rosa hotel, starting in 2013.
“We have included local folklore and have been influenced by the Star Carr horned head dresses from 11,000 years ago, presently featured in the After the Ice Age exhibition in York.”
Whitby Krampus Run has grown to be a popular public event over the whole weekend including an evening ball and fundraising for charities, in partnership with independent businesses in the area.
It is now involved in other local and folklore events and recently featured at Whitby Fish and Ships Festival alongside Made In Whitby with St Hilda, the Wyrms and, fundraising for Whitby Disablement Action Group.
