Improvements planned at Castlegate area of Malton following the February floods

The Castlegate area of Malton is in line for a big facelift and improvement after suffering the worst flooding for more than 20 years in February.

Town Mayor, Cllr Paul Emberley, said the clean-up was being arranged in a joint operation by Ryedale District Council (RDC), North Yorkshire County Council, and the town council to enhance the street scene, and a flood alleviation scheme was underway.

Cllr Martin Dales said improvements planned include new street furniture, murals on gable end walls, removal of clutter, and the provision of solid door flood gates.

Cllr Lindsey Burr said the flood defences had “held up well” and RDC was now in the mood to invest further in flood alleviation schemes.

Cllr Paul Andrews said there had been instances that sewage had flowed in homes in the worst hit parts of Malton and Norton.
