IN PICTURES: Popular duck race makes a welcome return to raise funds for Whitby RNLI

Hundreds of rubber ducks took to the water at Sandsend as the much-loved charity duck race returned after a break of several years, raising vital funds for Whitby RNLI.

Despite blustery conditions, the event proved a huge success, with every duck selling out as families and supporters gathered in Sandsend Valley to cheer on their feathered competitors.

Organised in support of Whitby RNLI, the race took place in the beck at Sandsend, with permission of the Mulgrave Estate. The ducks were released into the water and relied entirely on the natural flow of the beck to carry them towards the finish line.

There was plenty of excitement as the ducks battled the current, with cash prizes awarded to the first three across the finish line.

The winning ducks were:

  • First place: 744 – £100
  • Second place: 658 – £50
  • Third place: 162 – £25

Not every duck managed to complete the course, however! Three adventurous competitors, numbered 230, 359 and 237, failed to make it to the finish and were later discovered hiding in the bushes.

The event also featured a bottle tombola, kindly supported by the Friends of Whitby Lifeboat, alongside sales of Whitby RNLI calendars.

Organisers thanked everyone who braved the windy weather, purchased a duck and supported the fundraiser. With all the ducks sold out, the final fundraising total is still being calculated, including donations made on the day.

The £2 duck tickets helped raise money for the RNLI, which relies on public support to provide vital training, equipment and essential kit for its volunteer lifeboat crews.
