Those exploring the town will now be encouraged to keep left when crossing the bridge in an effort to ensure social-distancing guidelines are observed.

A spokesman for Scarborough Borough Council said:

“We’re doing everything we can to support retail businesses in Whitby get back on their feet now they have been allowed to open once again.

“One way we’re doing that is to make sure shoppers feel safe while in the town centre.

“The one-way system is designed to allow people to easily get around while maintaining social distancing rules - which is not always easy with narrow streets and pavements.

“We also have our high street ambassadors on hand to offer help and guidance.

“Our local retailers need our help more than ever right now and we hope these measures will reassure shoppers it is safe to come out to support our high streets.”
