Maisie's owners thought they had lost their beloved pet when she fell from the cliff top on Sunday.

But, thanks to members of the Staithes and Whitby coastguard teams, she was rescued and returned to safety.

The couple and Maisie visited Staithes Coastguard earlier this week to thank them for their help.

In a card to the teams, they wrote: "We are very aware of the dangers of the cliffs and are always careful walking our dogs.

"On this occasion, in the blink of an eye, things got out of control and, in a freak accident, Maisie fell off the cliff at Runswick Bay.

"We won't lie, by the time you turned up we were sure it was a hopeless cause and we would never see Maisie alive again.

"But the professionalism, determination and compassion of the team who came to help was amazing.

"We will be eternally grateful to you all for bringing out 'baby' back to us.

"From the bottom of our hearts, thank you."
