Scalby charity sale raises £3,000 to help build school for orphans in Uganda

Former Miss Scarborough, Carolyn Hodgson and her army of volunteers raised £3,000 at the weekend with a Clothes and Interior Sale in Scalby Community Hall.

There were bargains galore, with dozens of tables and clothes rails full of designer labels all donated by Carolyn’s friends and family.

“What a fabulous atmosphere”, said Carolyn. “Bargain hunters had travelled from far and wide and spent up to a couple of hours seeking out an affordable new wardrobe.”

“Shopping highlights included a nearly new pair of Jimmy Choo shoes worth a whopping five hundred pounds, which fetched £20.

“Designer curtains costing thousands and the sale of elegant evening wear from Versace, Mint Velvet, L.K.Bennett and other upmarket high street brands helped the total top £3,000.

The homemade cake stall, staffed by Carolyn’s mum, Maureen and her friends, sustained the energy levels of keen shoppers who enjoyed grabbing a bargain.

The money raised will enable builders in Uganda to start work on constructing a school for orphans and children with HIV.

Education in the African country is costly, which means many of the street children struggle to break the poverty cycle.

“We are thrilled to contribute towards such a worthy cause that will raise the hopes of so many children living in poverty, many of whom have lost their parents to AIDS,” said Carolyn.
