Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume visits Gladstone Road School
Alison Hume MP has visited Gladstone Road Infant School to tour its innovative Learning Zone.
Ms Hume was shown around the centre, which caters for children who struggle in a traditional classroom environment, by head teacher Helen Halliday as part of her drive to learn more about SEND provision across Scarborough, Whitby and the villages.

As well as meeting pupils receiving tailored support and staff responsible for providing it, Ms Hume was also briefed on how the hub has become an integral part of the school’s mission to enhance learning opportunities.
Ms Hume, who recently organised two surveys on SEND for people living in her Scarborough and Whitby constituency, before passing the collated evidence on to Ministers ahead of the Government’s recent White Paper, said: “The Learning Zone is a brilliant resource that clearly puts children at the heart of everything.

“It was inspiring to see the dedication of Helen and her staff, as well as their determination to ensure every child is given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.”
Rated as ‘Good’ following its latest OFSTED report, Gladstone Road’s holistic approach includes running a series of sports clubs to promote health and physical activity.
During her tour of the site, on Wooler Street, Scarborough, Ms Hume also spoke with the school’s Wellbeing Ambassadors; Year Six pupils who volunteer their time to help look after the emotional welfare of others.
Ms Hume said: “I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with the Wellbeing Ambassadors and talking to them about my work.
“They showed a maturity beyond their years, clearly care deeply about others at Gladstone Road and help to nurture an environment where every pupil feels properly supported to thrive.”
