A former soldier who saved three dogs from appalling conditions in Cyprus is trying to give a fourth abandoned animal a home in Staxton.

Barry White and his family adopted Hooch, Daisy and Poppy while he was stationed in Cyprus serving with the Yorkshire Regiment. He retired from the army five years ago and now works as a lorry driver but when he heard about another dog in desperate need of help, he had to act.

Eddie is a German Short-haired Pointer who was found dumped in the middle of Cyprus. He has scars on his legs, almost as if he has been deliberately cut. As soon as they saw him on a dog rescue website, Barry and his wife Sue felt compelled to help and asked if they could adopt him.

“It would be easy to just go to a rescue centre here and pick one up but I was in Cyprus for four-and-a-half years and I've seen the conditions that they're in,” said Barry, 51.

Flights were booked to bring Eddie over to Staxton but then a medical check revealed he was suffering cruciate ligament rupture and dysplasia in both hips - conditions requiring expensive surgery. The operations Eddie needed cost around 5,500 Euros. Barry, Sue, their son Josh and his girlfriend Jenny Barr have been trying to raise the funds the the treatment and have so far collected more than £4,000.

Eddie has been able to undergo his cruciate ligament operation and plans are in place for his first hip replacement. But the family are still around £1,000 off the money required for all the treatment Eddie needs.

"It costs around £12,000 to have the operation here in the UK, therefore we are getting the funds together to have the operation in Cyprus. Eddie will recuperate with a foster family in Cyprus and be with us just before Christmas."

Mr White served with the army for 24 years, initially with the Green Howards before it became the Yorkshire Regiment. He was stationed in Cyprus between 2011 and 2015. He found Hooch -a German Shorthaired Pointer - wandering around a village. Daisy - also a German Shorthaired Pointer - was discovered tied to a fence outside army barracks. Poppy - a Miniature Pinscher - was found on a desolate beach.

“They were all starving,” said Barry. “Little Poppy was just skin and bone.

“There's hundreds of strays in Cyprus, there's loads.”
