Scarborough photographer documents town’s arcades in new series
A photographer has documented Scarborough’s seafront arcades as part of a new series.
UK-based photographer Gem Radford has recently spent time in Scarborough working on a series titled Electric Memories, focused on the town’s arcades and seaside leisure spaces.
She said the project looks at these places outside of their busiest moments, early evening, closing time, and quieter hours, capturing a different side of spaces that are usually associated with noise, movement, and crowds.
Photographed across the seafront, the work documents a familiar part of Scarborough’s identity, but from a quieter, more observational perspective.

Gem’s website adds: “There are places along the British coast where the lights never quite surrender to the weather.
Arcades hum behind darkened glass.
"Marquees glow against washed-out sky.
"Carpets hold the echo of evenings that have already passed.

“Photographed without people, these spaces feel paused between seasons, between promise and memory.
“Electric Memories moves through seaside towns, where spectacle lingers quietly, and colour persists long after the crowds have gone.”
