Scarborough primary school trio complete 14-mile sponsored walk for charity

Three primary school-aged children raised more than £500 for a local charity by giving up their Easter holidays to complete a 14-mile sponsored walk.

Florence, Penny and Alice, who all attend Wykeham CE Primary School, began planning their charitable work one lunchtime at school.

Florence said: “We wanted to raise money for Candlelighters because it supports children with cancer.

"I’ve had a few family members with this diagnosis and we decided it would be nice to support young people like us who are going through it.”

The girls considered a range of initiatives to raise money, including giving up their favourite foods or a run, but eventually settled on a walk at a half marathon distance as they felt this would be a challenge they could achieve.

The girls walked from Hutton Buscel through the forests to Ellerburn, near Thornton Dale, and rounded the day off with a well-deserved ice cream!

Alice’s mum, Lizzie, said: “We are very proud of the girls for persevering with their initial idea.

"They never doubted themselves at any point.”

Rowena Thorp, Headteacher at Wykeham, added: “We teach children about courageous advocacy and the power they have to make a difference in the world.

"To see the girls put this into practice completely independently has been inspiring to our whole school community.”

The girls will receive a certificate from Candlelighters to mark their achievement and fundraising.
