Scarborough £1 million electric cable replacement work on schedule

The £1 million, 18-month  project to replace four miles of electric cable on the south side of Scarborough is on schedule.

Work started three weeks ago in the Seamer Road/Falsgrave area of town. Temporary traffic lights near the junction have caused a bus-stop to be moved temporarily and long queues of traffic.

The work is being carried out by O’Connor Utilities and Murphy Utilities on Northern Powergrid’s behalf.

To help alleviate the impact of the work, two teams instead of one are working on the site.

A spokeswoman for Northern Powergrid said: “Our important investment work to improve the electricity network that powers Scarborough and thousands of people’s everyday life is progressing on schedule.

“We’ve also adjusted our programme to help ease traffic congestion in the Seamer Road area. We completed work up to the junction at Spring Bankearlier this week and have now moved that team to join with our other team carrying out work further down the route.”

For around six weeks work will take place from the junction of Falsgrave Road/Mount Park Road to the traffic lights at the junction of Seamer Road and then continue along Seamer Road to the junction of Springhill Road.

One of the teams will return in early October to complete work from the junction of Seamer Road/Spring Bank to the traffic lights at the junction of Valley Road.

“By taking this approach we’re preventing two sets of lights being in place at the same time for motorists so we can help reduce traffic disruption in the Seamer Road area for local people and visitors to the town,” said the spokeswoman.

“We appreciate people’s patience while we invest in their community and we will continue to provides updates.”
