Scarborough vicar's 'Abbey Dash' to raise funds for local charities
The vicar of St Mark’s, Newby and St Luke’s, Scarborough, The Revd Mike Cansdale, has raised £600 for Gallows Close Community Centre and Sidewalk Youth Project.
On Sunday, November 30, Revd Mike took part in the Leeds Abbey Dash 10K, and set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for each charity.

Revd Mike said: “I was running to raise funds for two brilliant community organisations that I’ve got to know well over the past year I’ve been in Scarborough.”
The parishes take in the whole of Barrowcliff and Revd Mike has made an effort to link with local community groups and be involved in life on the estate.
He said: “I’ve found Barrowcliff really welcoming and enjoyed getting into the primary school and being part of the Big Local Board.
“I’m especially impressed by the amazing work of Gallows Close and wanted to do something to raise the profile and some funds.”
Rev Mike’s other charity is Sidewalk Youth Project that offers drop-ins and detached youth work across the town.
In partnership with Sidewalk, Revd Mike has set up a drop-in at St Luke’s after school each Thursday, welcoming young people passing the church from Graham Academy and St Augustine’s.
Revd Mike said: “On our first week we were glad to welcome ten young people into the church where we’ve a warm space, toast, hot chocolate, games and a chance to meet with friends.
“It’s a privilege to be a vicar in Scarborough and there are some brilliant people doing amazing work for our communities.
“I’m grateful to everyone who has sponsored my Abbey Dash!”
