Swap your clothes and help build a house for a family in need

All profits from ticket sales to the event, at Yay! Coffee on Friday March 27 from 7pm to 9pm, will raise cash for the Burniston Rebuild South Africa team from Burniston Church.

Spokesperson Georgette Donoghue said: “The clothes swap will be an evening of fun, music – and, of course, lovely clothes.

“Bring some garments and accessories along, and you’ll be given tokens for them which you can exchange for new clothes. Have a browse, try a few things on, have a drink and a nibble while you listen to some live music, and take home a gorgeous new outfit.

“All items of clothing must be clean, good quality and something you would be very happy to take away (no undies, please!).

“Jen from Temple Spa will also be there with her wonderful skin and make-up products.

“We’re very grateful to all the individuals and groups who have supported us so far.”

Any warm clothes remaining at the end of the event will be donated to the Rainbow Centre. Anything else left over will be given to a local charity shop.

The Burniston Rebuild South Africa team has been fundraising for a year now, and has so far raised £37,700 towards a total of £38,700 for travel, accommodation and building materials. A dozen 13-to-18-year-olds and eight adults will travel to Botleng township near Johannesburg at the end of July to join three other groups from around the country to help build a three-roomed house for a family who otherwise would be living in cardboard or corrugated iron makeshift housing.

The project is organised by British charity Urban Saints in conjunction with American charity Amor Ministries, which has been building houses with similar groups for the last 20 years; 20,000 houses have been built, all of which are still standing.

Other upcoming fundraising events include a car wash on Saturday 7 March at Burniston Church (12.30pm to 4pm) – customers can enjoy homemade refreshments in the church while their car is washed for a minimum donation of £5 – and a quiz night at the church from 6.30pm on Friday 20 March.
