Transformative Wizard of Oz-inspired installation unveiled
There is a new addition to this year’s lights festival courtesy of Scaborough Theatre Company.
The installation has been inspired by the company’s upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz which runs at the Spa, Sarborough, next month.

Created by artist Simon Doughty, the installation offers passers-by a captivating dual experience.
By day, the artwork bursts with colourful representations of the main characters and setting, by night it becomes something entirely different. With the use of lighting, hidden threats and darker forces Dorothy and her friends encounter on their journey down the Yellow Brick Road are revealed.

Al Weatherhill, artistic director of Scarborough Theatre Company and commissioner of the installation, said: “I am so pleased Simon has come on board and created this wonderful and thoughtful piece of art for us. We hope other local artists will consider doing the same for future productions.”
The installation is situated in Hanover Road, where Scarborough Theatre Company has taken over two shop spaces. Once overlooked units, these spaces are now being transformed as part of the company’s mission to bring a touch of theatrical magic to th equiet corner of town.
The premises will serve as storage for the company’s ever-growing collection of costumes and props; an eclectic treasure trove the company hopes to open to the public once the spaces are fully prepared. Community members will also be welcome to hire costumes and props, supporting both local creativity and the company’s ongoing work.
In the meantime, the public is encouraged to walk by, witness the installation’s evolution and enjoy a glimpse into the imaginative world Scarborough Theatre Company is creating in Hanover Road.
The Wizard of Oz is on in the Grand Hall, Scarborough Spa, on Saturday, December 20 and Sunday, December 21, daily at 11am and 3pm.
