Watch shocking moment teenager drives car taken from Filey wrong way around York roundabout

This is the shocking moment a teenage driver led a high speed police chase the wrong way around a busy roundabout.

Terrifying police bodycam footage shows Levi Smith, 18, causing chaos as he drives in the opposite direction all the way around the Grimston Bar roundabout, in York.

Frightened drivers can be seen dodging Mr Smith's Silver Toyota Avensis - which he had taken with consent - as he speeds towards them in attempts to evade the police on March 31 this year.

The teenager then drove onto an exit slip road onto the A64 York Outer Ring Road and headed westbound on the eastbound carriageway.

He abandoned the car on the carriageway and took to the fields on foot but was caught by police shortly afterwards.

The incident came at the end of a high-speed police chase during which the teenager had raced through Dunnington at twice the 40mph speed limit.

He had been clocked doing 80mph in a 50mph zone.

Smith, of Lynwith Lane Caravan Site, Goole, pleaded guilty to aggravated taking of a vehicle without consent, driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance, York Crown Court heard.

He was jailed for eight months, banned from driving for 25 months and ordered to take an extended driving test before driving alone again.

The third time he has been jailed in three months.

In September, York magistrates jailed him for two separate sets of driving offences.

Last month, he was jailed at Teesside Crown Court for 27 months for an unrelated robbery and assault.

His solicitor advocate Simon Walker said Smith had had a difficult upbringing, had mental health problems, may suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and had been assessed in 2023 as being the victim of exploitation.

He had lost his mother when he was two and had been brought up by other family members.

Mr Walker said: “He has seen or been made to do a lot in his very young life."

Kelly Clarke, prosecuting, said Smith took a Toyota Avensis from a house in Folkton near Filey on March 31, removed its number plates and put false number plates in its rear window.

Police officers were on the look-out for him, spotted him driving towards York on the A1079 behind them and tried to get him to stop. He didn’t.

He overtook them in a no overtaking area and drove off forcing other vehicles to take evasive action.

He drove at 80mph through a 50mph zone and continued at 80mph through the 40mph zone through Dunnington before reaching the Grimston Bar roundabout.

There traffic was heavy and as Smith tried to drive through a gap that wasn’t there, he hit a car before heading down onto the A64.

He has previous convictions for dangerous driving and taking a vehicle without consent.

Mr Walker said the offences were committed when Smith was 17.

The crash on the Grimston Bar roundabout had been at low speed.
