Whitby church to stage 'musical trip around Europe' concert

The St Hilda's Festival Orchestra is putting on an entertaining concert in St Hilda's Church on Whitby’s West Cliff Saturday June 20.

The choice of well-known music takes us round northern Europe, starting with the Hebrides Overture, a piece inspired by Mendelssohn's trip to Fingal's Cave.

From there we are taken to Finland to hear Sibelius' tone poem of the same name.

On to Norway and the Hall of the Mountain King in the Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg.

After the interval, take an epic journey to Kazakhstan to visit the Steppes of Central Asia by Borodin, before coming back with Brahms for some jolly Hungarian Dances, before arriving home to Sir Edward Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March no. 4.

The orchestra is made up of musicians from the Whitby and Scarborough area, and is conducted by Steve Maltby.

The entertainment has been sponsored by the Fleece Inn on Church Street.

Tickets can be purchased on the door at £10, under 18s free, 7pm start.
