Whitby cobbler and author releases debut book on beauty of human connection

Whitby-based cobbler and writer Samwell (Sam Witty) is stepping beyond the counter at Timpson’s with the release of his debut book, Touching Souls and Changing Faces.

It’s a deeply personal reflection on connection, empathy, and what it means to be human in the modern world.

Written between long days at work and quiet evenings by the sea, the book blends raw storytelling, philosophy, and personal experience to explore how we can communicate more openly, not just with others, but with ourselves.

Samwell said: “I’ve spent years meeting people from all walks of life in my day job.

“You learn quickly that everyone’s carrying something.

"This book came from a place of wanting to understand that, to listen better, to see people fully, and to help others do the same.”

In Touching Souls and Changing Faces, Samwell draws from his own journey, one marked by resilience, mental health challenges, and rediscovery, to offer readers an invitation to pause, reflect, and reconnect.

It’s about presence, compassion, and rediscovering the humanity that often gets lost in daily noise.

Samwell’s journey to publication was supported by his employer, Timpson, through their Dreams Come True scheme, which helps colleagues bring personal projects to life – a gesture that turned his vision into reality.

John Timpson, Chairman of Timpson, said: “We were delighted to help Sam to publish his inspirational book.

“We hope that his insights help readers to get a better understanding of their journey through life.”

Written with warmth and candour, it speaks to readers who feel adrift or disconnected, offering comfort and clarity without pretence.

“I’m proud to call Whitby home,” Samwell added.

“It’s a place that gives you space to think and breathe and I think that’s what this book is really about.

"Slowing down enough to actually see one another again.”

“Touching Souls and Changing faces came out of a desire to leave something behind for anyone who felt as lost as I did, and rapidly became my reason to stay.

"To be a message in the world that grace can be found, even in the mundane. connection can be found, even in a fleeting interaction.

“A reminder that if you’re still here, there is still purpose.”

Touching Souls and Changing Faces is now available in paperback.
