A gofundme page launched after a fire broke out at the Whitby Wildlife Charity Shop on Flowergate on Thursday, April 2, has raised more than £3,500

The charity said that the fire was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault and, although it was dealt with very quickly by the fire service, there has been significant smoke damage throughout the shop.

Speaking on Facebook, a spokesperson for the charity said: “We have been advised that the shop has suffered around 20% damage, mainly due to smoke, which will require a significant clean-up before we can reopen.

"The most important thing is that no one was hurt, and we are incredibly grateful for the quick response from the fire service and the actions taken at the time

“Unfortunately, the impact of the damage means that the shop will be closed until further notice and we are currently unable to accept donations of items for the charity shop.”

However, the charity has appealed for donations of prizes, which had been stored at the shop prior to an upcoming event, and say they are desperately in need of items such as toiletries, plushies, new and sealed edibles and drinkables, and unwanted gifts.

The sanctuary is now working with its landlord and inspectors, and must complete a number of safety checks before the shop can reopen.

The spokesperson said: “As a charity, this is a very difficult time for us. The shop plays a vital role in supporting the wildlife we care for, and being closed means a loss of important income.”

To help see the charity through whilst the shop is closed, a gofundme page has been launched to raise vital funds – to donate visit: https://gofund.me/30d15e2cf

The sanctuary has also added essential cleaning supplies to it’s Amazon Wishlist which can be found at: https://amzn.eu/0c3f0vLr

The spokesperson continued: “Your support truly means everything to us and to the animals we help every day.

“Thank you for standing by us, for your kindness, patience, and ongoing support – it truly means everything — we’ll keep you updated as we work towards reopening.”
