Fred Wyrley-Birch said: “Sadly, we often hear of people accepting low, on-the-spot offers without realising the true value of their items.

"Many of these companies then send the items to auction themselves.

"Selling through a reputable auction house gives you the best chance of a significant return.

"Our message is simple: don’t accept less than your items are worth – let the open market decide and send your items to auction.”

Anderson & Garland have a proven track record of achieving remarkable results from surprising finds.

At a recent valuation day in Tynemouth, a rare silver medal was brought in by a client unaware of its significance; it later sold for an astonishing £80,000.

Fred Wyrley-Birch is a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA) and leads the region’s only auction department with fully qualified specialists in jewellery, watches and silver.

His additional areas of expertise include coins, militaria, toys and pop culture.

Georgina Norman holds a degree in History and Art History from Northumbria University and an MA in Fine Art, The History of the Art Market and Connoisseurship from Christie’s Education, New York.

Her specialist interests include jewellery, silver, costume and textiles, pictures and works of art.
