Whitby's Wheelchair Adventurer takes on European 'Source to Sea' challenge for Whizz Kidz

Bash Wright aka 'The Wheelchair Adventurer' is taking on another incredible fundraising challenge travelling 766 miles for Whizz Kidz.

Having previously navigated Scotland's loughs and rivers in a canoe and pushed completely unassisted from Lands End to John O'Groats, Bash has now set his sights on navigating Europe.

Having flown from Manchester to Switzerland on June 6 and enjoyed a couple of days rest, Bash (officially known as Tony Wright) began an incredible 766-mile solo push from 'Source to Sea' of the Rhine.

The journey, in his specially adapted wheelchair will take Bash from the glaciers of Switzerland through Germany, France and Belgium following the Rhine to its exit in Holland.

Bash, 63, who lives in Whitby, North Yorkshire, when he is not off on an adventure said: "No backup van, no assistance, and wild-camping along the way - I will be completely self-sufficient and I am not concerned by speed or time it will take as long as it takes."

Carrying, everything he needs with him, on his custom-made wheelchair, Bash says he might allow himself one night of 'luxury' per week, staying on a campsite or a bed and breakfast to recharge his electric consumables and take a 'proper' weekly wash.

Whizz Kidz supports young wheelchair users and their families. Since starting in 1990, it has helped thousands of young people to lead lives full of fun, freedom and independence.

The charity empowers young wheelchair users by providing wheelchairs, equipment, support, and confidence-building experiences they need, and campaigning for a more inclusive society.

Ollie Buncombe, Community Fundraising Manager at Whizz Kidz, said: “It’s a real privilege to once again be supported by Bash in yet another fundraising challenge.

“Bash's drive and motivation to change the lives of young wheelchair users is nothing short of astounding, pushing himself to the limits to raise vital funds for Whizz Kidz.

“We are so grateful to him, and proud to have him represent our charity. We will be following his journey in earnest, watching for updates and are all wishing him the best of luck for his incredible challenge from source to sea.”
