Work starts on holiday homes for poorly children being built in memory of Bradley Lowery

The Bradley Lowery Foundation has announced that construction of its holiday home in Scarborough will soon begin, after work had been halted during the coronavirus pandemic.

The five-bedroom holiday home, named Super Brad’s Pad will provide luxury breaks for families whose children have life-threatening, shortening or compromising medical conditions.

Construction of the home had been due to begin in Scarborough earlier this year but was delayed due to government-imposed restrictions on the building and construction industry during the pandemic.

Now, after receiving the green light from the home’s architect, contractors and Scarborough Borough Council, the foundation has announced that work on the home is set to begin.

Despite this, Gemma Lowery, Bradley’s mum and founder of the foundation, has said that the generosity of local builders and contractors, as well as the general public, may still have an important role to play in the project. Reductions in donations and delays to building work during the pandemic have meant that the foundation is still looking to raise additional funding to ensure that the home will be completed as planned.

She said: “Although the nation has been in lockdown for the past few months, social isolation is a day-to-day reality for many families with poorly children.

“The home will be a permanent legacy to Bradley; Scarborough was his favourite place to visit and it is fitting that the location will soon have a home that can help provide precious memories to hundreds of families.

“We decided to build the holiday home as a way to provide respite care and support to families that are going through or have gone through similar experiences to ours.

“Although we are currently in a position where we are able to continue with the project, it is important that we continue to raise funds to ensure that the holiday home fulfils the foundation’s vision for the accommodation.”

Since it was founded, the Bradley Lowery Foundation has raised more than £3 million for dozens of poorly children across the UK; established a dedicated support line for the families of children with cancer; donated more than £200,000 to researching childhood cancers and campaigned for new drugs to be introduced in the UK.
