Youngster, 6, from Glaisdale, near Whitby, cycles 21 miles to help Children With Cancer

Lily Purtill 6, was watching television when she saw an advert for Children with Cancer UK.

Mum Helen Purtill, who runs Glaisdale Playgroup, said: “Lily didn’t realise that children got poorly with cancer and she decided she wanted to raise some money.

“So she set herself the challenge of cycling 15 miles in a week.”

Lily, who is in year two at Glaisdale School, said: “An advert came on TV and the children were all ringing the bell and I thought cycling was a good idea to raise money.

Lily set off with grandma, Sue Thompson, and on her first day completed 4.4 miles cycling around Glaisdale Dale.

After cycling with her aunt Lynn Foster and family friends Steph Raw and Charlie Burtt, the youngster far exceeded her original target and completed a grand total of 21 miles.

Lily set out to raise £150 but with donations still rolling in, she has far exceeded that amount.

To date she has now raised £1,000.

She said: “I smashed it! And I could go again quite easily.”

Helen said: “We couldn’t be any prouder.

"Thank you to everyone who has cycled with Lily and sponsored her.”
