The council’s cabinet today voted to give £60,000 from its Section 106 funds to the York Housing Association (YHA) project in Hinderwell Lane, Staithes.

The scheme will provide 12 homes for rent and shared ownership for households in need with a local connection to Hinderwell Parish and received planning permission from the North York Moors National Park Authority last year.

The cabinet heard that a budget of £1,250,000 had been set but that it later increased by £330,000 due to a change to the drainage required following site investigations.

Cllr Carl Maw, the cabinet member for stronger communities and housing, welcomed the support for the scheme.

He said: “It seems unfair that people living in villages like Staithes can be priced out of their housing market by people buying houses for holiday lets.

“This development is specifically for the residents of the Hinderwell area and the idea is that it will be affordable housing for those who live there.

"These are communities that people have been brought up in and why because they cannot afford to stay in them should they be made to move out?”

The cabinet approved the granting of £60,000 from its Section 106 Affordable Housing commuted sums to help meet the budget shortfall.
