The former deputy leader of the council has been a member of the authority since 2003.

Cllr Mallory said she did not want to say any more about her reasons for stepping away from the party at this time or what her future plans were.

Next comes Labour with 13 and then their coalition partners the Independent Group with 10.

Cllr Mallory is the second councillor to leave the Tories since the May 2019 elections.

Cllr Andrew Backhouse quit the group in November last year after he did not progress as a candidate to defend his seat in the North Yorkshire County Council elections scheduled to take place in 2021.
