Council to decide on costs for potential Whitby by-election

The costs of a potential by-election in Whitby are set to be debated at a full town council meeting tonight (Feb 3).

A potential by-election for a seat on Whitby Town Council could cost the authority almost £6,000.

Last month, the council announced a vacancy for one of the seats in the Stakesby Ward.

Holding the by-election would cost £4,000 and councillors are set to decide whether the authority should also cover the cost of polling cards.

According to an agenda prepared for a full meeting tonight, the council can decide to meet the “additional discretionary cost of £1,800 for polling cards”.

Councillors have been asked to “consider the potential costs associated with the issue of polling cards in the event of a by-election for Stakesby Ward and to determine whether the council wishes to meet the additional discretionary cost of £1,800 for polling cards in addition to the estimated costs of £4,000 for the potential by-election”.

The Stakesby ward is currently represented by councillors Peter Bolton, Jacqui Layman, Trisha Kelly, and Amanda Smith, according to the town council’s website.

Members of the public are invited to attend the full council at the Pannett Art Gallery at 6pm.
