New owners of Scarborough’s Cask Inn propose changes to improve residential accommodation

The new owners of Scarborough’s Cask Inn have applied to make external changes to the public house which is in the town’s conservation area.

The applicant, Merrydith Property, wants to undertake works to upgrade the building to provide “better quality residential accommodation within a building that has stood empty for a while”.

The proposed works would involve changes to the rooflights of the property at Cambridge Terrace.

Submitted plans state: “There are two small roof lights in the southern part of the roof at this point and the proposal is to remove the southernmost one and replace it with a larger one in a slightly different position.

“The new roof light will not be overly large and its new position will be better aligned with windows below in the main elevation, resulting in a more balanced appearance to this elevation.”

The council’s environmental health officer has raised no comments or recommendations regarding the scheme.

The Cask Inn lies within Scarborough’s conservation area and is not listed.

Customers at The Cask Inn, in Cambridge Terrace, had hoped to take over the running of the venue after it was put up for sale for £350,000.

However, the bid was unsuccessful and the pub closed temporarily in May before being taken over and reopened by its new owners.

Open since the 1970s, the venue had been home to the Scarborough Jazz Club for more than 17 years.

North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the application which is currently pending consideration.
