The council’s planning officers have now confirmed, however, that the plans have now been withdrawn by the applicant.

The seating would have straddled land owned by both Scarborough Council and North Yorkshire County Council.

The plans attracted a large amount of support with 50 people writing to the council to say that they would welcome the seating.

Seventeen people also objected to the idea.

The piazza was created outside the Sands development in 2016 as part of a Yorkshire Water legacy project following its multi-million pound water quality improvement scheme carried out in the town between 2012 and 2014.
