Personal training business to be built in residential garden in Scarborough

A personal training gym will be built in the garden of a residential property in Scarborough.

The personal training business will be set up in the garden of a residential house after plans were approved by North Yorkshire Council.

Christopher Stubbings’ scheme will involve the demolition of an existing garage in the Scholes Park area and the construction of a “significantly larger” building to be used as a personal training gym.

The business will operate from 7am to 7pm on weekdays and from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays.

Music would only be played during daytime sessions between 9am to 5pm “at a low level to allow verbal instructions to be given to clients”.

The new flat roof building will be 9 metres long and 3.2 metres high, and will be accessed via double sliding doors.

The applicant said the personal training would be conducted on a one-to-one basis and by appointment only.

Officers noted that a driveway is available with space for one client to park.

Scarborough Town Council supported the plan, subject to adequate soundproofing, while five members of the public also sent letters in support of the application.

According to planning officers, the current garage is of a “poor design that does not contribute to the character of the site or wider street scene”.

They noted that the new building will be “significantly larger” and will take up around 50 per cent of the garden.

“However, due to the single-storey nature of the proposal and its location in the rear garden, it will maintain an acceptable level of subservience and ensure that it does not create excessive massing or overdevelopment of the plot,” officers added.

The development received approval from North Yorkshire Council, subject to conditions on sound and vibration insulation.
