Last year, it was revealed that Scarborough couple Nick and Sandra Thomas had donated £100,000 to kickstart the project to transform the Temperance Hall in Scalby.

The hall, in North Street, was built in 1894 and was given to the village by John Edward Ellis, a Liberal MP and Quaker. It was later used as a Methodist reading room.

After being gifted to the Scalby Village Trust an application to use the hall for new businesses was granted in 2012 but funding was unable to be secured, leaving the project in limbo.

The Thomases, through their HQ Collection, are donating £100,000 to the scheme while the village trust is raising the money to cover a new disabled entrance and stairlift.

As the 2012 planning permission has now lapsed the change of use for the building was reapplied for. Following a public consultation, Scarborough Council planning officers have now granted the scheme a second approval, though the work must begin within three years.

The refurbishment will include creating three ground floor business units to help local start-up businesses.

Theatre producer Mr Thomas is the chairman and founder of Qdos Entertainment Group and last year was awarded an MBE for services to the entertainment industry and charity.
