Scarborough’s Alpamare water park applies for 8am alcohol licence ahead of reopening in July

Scarborough’s Alpamare water park has applied for a licence to serve alcohol from 8am ahead of a planned reopening.

The Alpamare water park in Scarborough’s North Bay has submitted a premises licence application to North Yorkshire Council.

It comes ahead of a planned reopening at the end of July after the council chose Flamingo Land as the operator of the water park.

If approved, the permitted opening hours would also be from 8am to 10pm, Monday to Sunday.

Public representations regarding the application are open until Thursday, July 18.

Commenting on the plans to reopen the site, North Yorkshire Council’s assistant director for property services, Kerry Metcalfe, said: “Work is ongoing at Alpamare and with Flamingo Land to get the water park ready for re-opening at the end of July.”

Shirley Smith, president of the Scarborough Hospitality Association, said she was “delighted” by the planned reopening and believed Alpamare would have “a really positive impact on local hospitality businesses, and in turn benefit the whole community”.

Gordon Gibb, Flamingo Land’s chief executive and owner, said it was “an exciting new venture” for the company.

The council took control of the site last year when developer Benchmark Leisure Ltd went into administration.

Alpamare opened in Scarborough’s North Bay in 2016 with the help of a £9m bail-out loan from the now-defunct Scarborough Council.
