"We take immense pride in our town": Council transforms Scarborough fly-tipping hotspot
An alleyway clean-up in Scarborough took place this week as part of this year’s Great British Spring Clean, a nationwide campaign encouraging communities to take pride in their local environment.
The clean-up effort took place between Hope Street and Clark Street in Scarborough on Monday, March 23.

Led by North Yorkshire Council (NYC), the operation brought council teams and residents together to transform an area previously affected by waste build-up and persistent fly-tipping. Though the alleyway is privately owned, the council is working with landlords and residents to clean and maintain the problem areas.
As the Great British Spring Clean continues to inspire action across the country, Scarborough’s contribution demonstrates how local community effort can create visible, immediate improvements.

Over the morning, council operatives removed bulky waste items from the alleyway, staging them for collection and disposal by council wagons. Enforcement Officers engaged households throughout the morning, offering advice on waste storage, recycling, and future prevention.
A spokesperson for the NYC Environmental Enforcement Team said: “We take immense pride in our town, and the transformation seen today reflects the community spirit that makes Scarborough such a special place.
"Through a combination of education, practical action, and firm enforcement where necessary, we’re committed to keeping our neighbourhoods clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.”
Following the successful clear-out, the Enforcement Team will continue monitoring the area and will issue follow-up messages to landlords to help maintain the improvements and prevent a return of fly-tipping.
