Kevin Hollinrake calls for better deal for the North as he's reelected as Filey's MP

Minutes after the last bundle of his 35,634 votes had been counted, in the giant rural constituency of Thirsk and Malton, which includes Filey, Mr Hollinrake told the crowded Malton Sport and Leisure Centre “People in the North want the same opportunities as those in the South.”

He urged that a fair deal was needed on Brexit to ensure such areas as Ryedale would benefit.

“We have to keep faith with the electorate” he added.

While Brexit had played a key part in the election, he believed there was “general disillusionment” with politics and politicians, and he slammed politicians who had engaged in what he described as “unacceptable language” and a lack of respect for each other.

Mr Hollinrake said much could be achieved on such key issues as social care by cross-party politicians working together.

But he praised the friendly spirit which had existed between all candidates in the Thirsk and Malton campaign.

He secured a majority of more than 25,000 to win his third victory in the Thirsk and Malton constituency, beating the Labour Party candidate David Yellin into second place.

Veteran Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, and Ryedale District Council member, Di Keal, was delighted to see her vote of 6,774 double for the party.

“We were very pleased,” she said.

The Thirsk and Malton constituency result was one of the last to be declared – at just before 5.30 am on Friday.
