New Valhalla pub applies for changes on historic Whitby street
A pub on one of the most historic streets in Whitby could see the installation of illuminated outdoor signs.
Valhalla (York) Ltd wants to add an illuminated hanging sign to advertise its Whitby pub at a former ironmongers at 6 Grape Lane.

Last year the company was given permission to convert the site into a pub and holiday flats despite local objections. The first and second floors will become three one-bedroom flats while a two-bedroom holiday apartment will be created on the third floor.
The property is located in the town’s conservation area and is a listed building of recognised historic and architectural importance.

“Grape Lane is one of Whitby’s most historic streets, characterised by narrow proportions, traditional shopfronts, and a strong sense of historic identity,” the application notes.
The company said that the proposed signage was an “essential and functional element of the approved public house use” and that the proposal would preserve and enhance its historic and architectural significance.
“The property contributes significantly to the character and appearance of the conservation area. The streetscape is typified by traditional hanging signs, many of which are modest in scale, constructed from natural materials, and either unlit or subtly illuminated. These features provide an established precedent that informs the design of the proposed sign.”
To date, no objections have been made against the proposal by local residents or Whitby Town Council.
The use of reclaimed oak for the sign frame reflects “traditional materials historically used in pub signage and joinery,” according to plans.
“The mortice and tenon construction method reinforces authenticity and avoids modern, visually intrusive fixing techniques. The oak will be stained brown and sealed with a protective lacquer, ensuring durability while maintaining a natural and subdued appearance,” it added.
North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the application which is open to representations from members of the public.
