Cllr Siddons said the borough was now preparing for its “comeback”.

He said: “The borough is built on our ability to welcome people from all over the country. That is why we are the second most popular tourist destination after London.

“However, the changes announced this lunchtime by the Prime Minister do not mean that we can let our guard down.

“We must continue to be vigilant and remain so, maintaining the new one metre plus rule.

“The council has introduced wider pavements in busy areas and one way systems to allow for safe social distancing. We are using Street Ambassadors throughout the borough to assist the public where potential bottlenecks occur.

“The public are already used to the new normal that means queuing and using contactless to pay for goods wherever possible. All these measures will continue to help keep people safe.

“Our businesses have suffered greatly during the lockdown but now have a chance to salvage some of the remaining season ensuring their long-term viability and saving jobs.

“The council is already planning how we can do more to extend the season and I hope to be able to announce new initiatives as the summer progresses.

“Let’s not forget those local traders who kept working to provide a service for us during the lockdown.

“Keep supporting them. They need your support now more than ever. Traders, public and business owners must continue to remain on their guard. This virus is not over yet.

“Let’s make the comeback greater than the setback.”
