Scarborough councillor Janet Jefferson welcomes 'much-needed' money from government's rough sleeping fund

A Scarborough Council cabinet member has welcomed the news that the borough authority has received a share of an extra £112 million funding to help rough sleepers.

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick MP announced on Tuesday that Scarborough had been awarded £136,148 from the Rough Sleeping Initiative fund.

Cllr Janet Jefferson, Scarborough Council’s cabinet member for finance and operations said the money was “much-needed”.

She said: “We’re pleased that we’ve been successful in obtaining a much-needed grant to help some of the most vulnerable people in our borough.

“The money will be used to continue funding our Rough Sleeping Coordinator, who works to ensure a more coordinated approach between the partner organisations that provide support for rough sleepers and to fund a Mental Health Support Worker.

“The remaining money will help to fund temporary accommodation for rough sleepers.”

The Government said the funding is a 30% increase nationally this year and will fund up to 6,000 bed spaces and 2,500 support staff across the country.
