KEY DETAILS

Purpose of the Plan

The Whitby Neighbourhood Plan sets out locally driven planning policies to guide development, protect heritage, and enhance community infrastructure.

Consultation Period

The Pre-Submission Consultation runs through late 2025 and ends at midnight on January 30, offering everyone in Whitby the chance to comment before the plan is formally submitted.

Community Involvement

The plan has been prepared by a dedicated Steering Group, including Town Councillors and representatives from local groups, ensuring it reflects the diverse needs of Whitby’s residents.

Focus Areas

Policies cover housing, design, green spaces, heritage, active travel, accessibility, business, tourism, and climate change.

Once adopted, the plan will become part of statutory planning policy, helping ensure development meets Whitby’s needs and aspirations

Joyce Stangoe, Chair of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group speaking on its behalf, said: "This consultation is a vital opportunity for the people of Whitby to shape the future of our town.

"By contributing your views, you can help ensure that issues such as housing, transport, green spaces, and heritage are protected and developed in ways that truly benefit our community.”

The Whitby Neighbourhood Plan’s key policies:

♦ ensure that new housing is available for local people by introducing a ‘principal residence’ policy which would prevent new housing from being used as a second home or holiday let

♦ protects local green spaces and the natural environment.

♦ support businesses and tourism while balancing the needs of residents.

♦ encourage sustainable housing that meets local demand.

♦ preserve Whitby’s heritage assets for future generations.

♦ promote climate resilience and a pathway to net zero
