Remembrance events across Scarborough

This year marks 100 years since the Battle of the Somme and those who fought in all wars will be remembered at events across the region.

On Sunday the traditional cross laying was held at Scarborough’s Alma Square.

Ahead of this weekend’s events the Mayor of Scarborough, Cllr Simon Green, said: “As we all know, this year marks 100 years since the Battle of the Somme during World War One and once again the Royal British Legion is encouraging everyone to support the Poppy Appeal during the official period of Remembrance until 13 November when we reflect and remember the fallen and our serving military personnel.

“Every year millions of pounds are raised to support the Armed Forces community.

“All money goes directly to its welfare work with serving service personnel, veterans and their families, so I am appealing to all members of our borough community to get involved and help to raise as much as possible.

bereaved families to Live On, wounded service men and women to Live On, younger veterans seeking employment and housing to Live On and older veterans needing age-related care to Live On.

Events in the region are as follows:

Scarborough – Friday 10.45am – short service of remembrance followed by two minutes silence at 11am, Alma Square.

Sunday 10am – service of Remembrance involving the joining together and blessing of standards and wreaths, a drumhead ceremony and poppies falling during the silence period, Queen Street Methodist Hall and to follow at the RNLI with the laying of wreaths at sea.

To be conducted by the lifeboat chaplain, Rev Pam Jennings.

The slipway will be lined by crew members, sea cadets, standard bearers. Congregants and spectators will watch from the West Pier and beach. High tide is at 2.50pm. Jacob Marton, the youngest crew member, will be the standard bearer.

Sunday 10.40am – a British Legion Remembrance service, Oliver’s Mount war memorial.

Malton – Sunday at 11am, Malton War Memorial is the venue for a Memorial Service, wreath laying ceremony and a parade.

Pickering – Friday at 10.55am for 11am, meet for a service for all denominations at the top of the Market Place.

Sunday at 2pm – service at Pickering parish church followed by a parade to the War Memorial on Bridge Street accompanied by the Stape Silver Band, short service for all denominations and wreath laying.

Kirkbymoorside – Friday at 11am – a two-minute silence will be observed at Pump Hill (opposite the Memorial Hall).

Sunday at 10.40am – a

parade will leave the Moorside Club and Bar led by the Town Band, marching to All Saints’ Church; followed by the service of Remembrance and laying of the wreath, church service and march back to the Moorside Club and Bar.

Helmsley – The Remembrance service in Helmsley will take place at All Saints’ Church War Memorial on Sunday at 10.45am
