Rescue boat called to swimmers in difficulty off coast of Runswick Bay, near Whitby

A rescue team was called out to help two swimmers in difficulties off the Yorkshire Coast.

Runswick Bay Rescue Boat was deployed by Humber Coastguard on Saturday morning to help the pair who the boat team described as in "obvious difficulty and struggling to get back to shore".

The boat team brought the swimmers to the beach at Runswick Bay where they were met by paramedics and members of Staithes Coastguard Team.

The pair were taken to James Cook Hospital and treated for severe hypothermia.

"This was a case of two lives saved and we are delighted both have made a full recovery," said Runswick Bay Rescue Boat on social media.

"Many thanks to the coastguard and ambulance service for their assistance in this rescue."
