Six people and two dogs cut off by the tide near Robin Hood's Bay are rescued

Six people and two dogs were swept out to sea in Whitby after becoming cut off from the tide.

Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team were called by Humber Coastguard Operations Centre in response to reports of five adults, a child and two dogs having become cut off by the tide between Robin Hood's Bay and Boggle Hole.

It happened on Thursday, around 3pm. Coastguards quickly located the casualties just to the south of Robin Hood's Bay.

They used water rescue equipment to assist the casualties along the shoreline and rock armour back to Robin Hood's Bay.

Once back at Bay, no further assistance was required as all casualties were safe and well, Whitby coastguard said.

Both Whitby RNLI lifeboats stood off from the shoreline to act as safety cover. Ravenscar Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked by Humber Coastguard.

Whitby coastguard said: "We want everyone to enjoy their activities at the coast, but please ensure that you are well prepared.

"In particular remember to check the weather forecast and tide times before you set out and consider how long your egress route will remain safe.

"If you get into difficulty or you see anyone else in trouble on the coast dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
