Six people and two dogs cut off by tide in Whitby as coastguard completes dramatic rescue

Shortly before 3pm on Thursday (Oct 15), Whitby Coastguard Rescue Team were called by Humber Coastguard Operations Centre in response to reports of five adults, a child and two dogs having become cut off by the tide between Robin Hoods Bay and Boggle Hole.

Upon arrival at the scene, Coastguards quickly located the casualties just to the South of Robin Hoods Bay.

Coastguard Officers assessed the welfare of the casualties and the best method of extracting them to safety.

Coastguard Teams used Water Rescue equipment to assist the casualties along the shoreline and rock armour back to Robin Hoods Bay.

Once back at Robin Hoods Bay, no further assistance was required as all casualties were safe and well, Whitby coastguard said.

Both Whitby RNLI Lifeboats stood off from the shoreline to act as safety cover.

Ravenscar Coastguard Rescue Team, Whitby RNLI lifeboat's ALB and ILB were also tasked by Humber Coastguard.

Senior Coastal Operations Officer S6A also attended.

Whitby coastguard said: "We want everyone to enjoy their activities at the coast, but please ensure that you are well prepared.

"In particular remember to check the weather forecast and tide times before you set out and consider how long your egress route will remain safe.

"If you get into difficulty or you see anyone else in trouble on the coast dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
