Soldier up for double assault

David Yuill, of Eastfield Road, appeared at East Riding Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to the two charges of assault by beating, although this was on the basis that he only pushed the women.

The court heard that Yuill had split up with his ex-girlfriend three weeks before the offences, which happened on January 19 this year at an address in Bridlington, where he had gone to collect a jumper.

He was with his new girlfriend at the time, the court was told.

Meanwhile, Yuill’s career with the army was “up in the air,” the court heard, following his period of absence without leave, for which he was due to be disciplined by a senior army officer.

Defending, Joanne Markham told the court that Yuill had been working at a garage during his period of absence. She said: “His employment with the army may not last for much longer.”

District Judge Frederick Rutherford referred to the offences as “a double assault.”

He said: “Even with the best will in the world, him entering those premises must have brought a fear to the individuals of serious injury.”

He added: “Whatever is said and done he has laid his hands on the individuals and as a consequence he admits that he has assaulted them.”

A representative from the British Army who was present in court confirmed that Yuill was still being paid an army salary which was around £1,700 a month.

Yuill was fined £500 with £85 court costs and a £50 victim surcharge.
