Highways England will carry out vital repairs and resurfacing on the A64 between Brambling Fields and Heslerton, as well as drainage improvement work between Sherburn and Ganton, to create safer, smoother journeys for the thousands of drivers.

The A64 route between the A1(M) and Eastfield, near Scarborough, has already seen huge improvements since March, as part of a £4m programme, building on £22m investment from last year.

Highways England project manager Chris Dunn said: “These latest improvements are a key phase of our commitment to make journeys along the A64 safer and more dependable.

“Ultimately, these improvement works will not only benefit the thousands of drivers who use the A64, but also the residents of the villages who live along this busy route.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their patience while we carry out this vital work to improve safety.”

Work to improve safety around the junctions at Crambeck and Welburn is due to complete by Friday September 18.

A new footpath has been built to link Crambeck and Castle Howard Station Road, and foundations have been laid for road widening to create new right turn lanes.

This project will also see the introduction of five new traffic islands and footpaths, with better junction layouts.

Engineers will dig down 300mm to repair the foundation of the road between the villages of East and West Heslerton later this month to prevent potholes reappearing, and will carry out resurfacing between Brambling Fields and East Heslerton, introducing a high friction surface to boost safety.

The village gateways at East and West Heslerton will also be completed as part of this work.

For the work to be done as safely and quickly as possible, closures will be in place between Station Road in West Heslerton and St Hilda’s Street in Sherburn over:

* the weekends of Friday September 25 to Monday September 28 and Friday October 2 to Monday October 5 (from 8pm on Fridays until 6am on Mondays)

* various Monday to Fridays (8pm to 6am) from 28 September for around four weeks

Access will be maintained for residents living in the area during closures. Anyone living outside of the closure points but needs to travel along the A64 can follow the clearly-signed diversion route.

The second phase of the Sherburn to Ganton drainage improvement work is due to start on Monday September 14.

The work will include renewing the drainage in the area which will help prevent flooding on the A64.

Work to install ‘village gateways’ is also continuing along the route and are expected to be completed between now and Christmas.

This involves lowering the speed limit in the villages, which will have gateway features such as ‘Welcome to’, ‘Please drive carefully’ and speed limit signs, as well as extra signage and coloured surfacing.
