Notices have also been installed at Filey’s Country Park in a bid to stop anyone camping or staying their motorhome there overnight.

A spokesperson for Scarborough Borough Council said the policy of banning sleeping and camping overnight in the car parks is not new, and the signs have gone up to reinforce the message.

But Leanne Booth, who visited Scarborough recently with her four children from South Yorkshire in their motorhome, said the Sea Life Centre car park has been used for a long time by motorhome owners to stay in overnight.

“They have put new signs up preventing overnight parking in a spot that has been used for years by people who are causing no harm whatsoever and want to enjoy the local scenery and bring money into the local economy,” she said.

On seeing the signs when they arrived, she and her family had to find somewhere else to stay at short notice, and ended up parking on Marine Drive for the night.

There, she was concerned about the speed of some of the drivers.

“I spent most of the night awake worrying that one of the cars would crash into our motorhome,” she said.

“Someone is going to get seriously hurt one of these days and then questions will be asked as to why nothing was done sooner.”

She questioned why the council was putting new signs up to stop overnight sleepers in car parks but had not installed speed bumps to deter speeding on Marine Drive.

“I had heard reports of how bad it was but after experiencing it first hand I’m amazed that there hasn’t been an accident already,” she said. “It’s terrifying.”
