Traffic lights to be installed at dangerous Scarborough roundabout next week

Work began in October last year to replace the mini-roundabout in Stoney Haggs Road in Seamer at its junction with Scarborough Road and Pasture Lane with traffic lights.

There have been a number of crashes at the junction in recent years, which lead North Yorkshire County Council to take action.

The work was held up due to supply chain issues caused by the pandemic but now North Yorkshire County Council’s highways team will be installing new traffic lights on weekdays starting on Monday.

Surfacing and lining works will then take place from 7pm to 3am on weekdays during the week commencing February 1.

The junction will be closed to traffic during these times with a diversion in place.

Pasture Lane will remain closed until all works are complete.

Cllr David Jeffels, the local member for Seamer, said: “It’s great to hear that our contractors can return to the site and finish off the works. Unfortunately the delay was out of our hands with many companies struggling to access materials during the pandemic.

“I’m a long-standing campaigner for safety improvements at the crossroads so this scheme is very welcome in the village.”

Cllr Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, added: “I would like to thank the public for their patience over the last few months. We are now undertaking the surfacing and lining works overnight to minimise disruption.

"The delivery of the scheme will have significant safety benefits for pedestrians, due to new pedestrian crossings, as well as drivers.”
