'We expect repairs to start later this year' - council issues update on Whitby road closed for 18 months
A route linking Whitby and Ruswarp which has already been shut for 18 months will continue to be closed for the foreseeable future.
Glen Esk Road, which links Ruswarp to Larpool Lane on the outskirts of Whitby, has been closed since August 2024 due to a landslip.

During this period, motorists have had to contend with new traffic lights being installed at the bottom of Helredale Road and weekend swing bridge closures in the main tourism season, while the ongoing closure of the Danger Bank area means there is one less diversion route for when traffic into town becomes chaotic or emergency incidents occur.
In an update requested by the Whitby Gazette, North Yorkshire Council’s highways area manager, Hannah Benson, said: “The tender process for appointing a contractor to carry out the works will begin soon.
"Once appointed, we expect repairs to start later this year and will share more details when we can.
“We appreciate the inconvenience the closure is causing and are committed to reopening the road as soon as possible.”
