Warning to take care on M62 and major roads after '˜severe' snow alert

Highways England has issued an Amber ‘be aware’ alert for snow, lasting from midnight tonight until 6am tomorrow morning across the North West of England.

It says heavy snow showers are expected on high ground and the organisation is warning drivers to take extra care when travelling on motorways and major A roads.

Phil Stockford, emergency planning manager for Highways England, said: “We issue severe weather alerts when there is a significant risk to vehicles using motorways and major A roads. The amber status means drivers should be prepared before setting out on journeys.

“We are working closely with the Met Office to monitor weather conditions and maintain safe roads and reliable journeys. We will have extra traffic officers and recovery vehicles to help respond to any incidents.”

Higher sections of the M6 in Cumbria and trans-Pennine routes are most at risk, including the M62, M65, M66, A56, A66 and A628.

Motorists are being advised to check weather and travel conditions before setting out on journeys.

Around 8-12cm of snow is expected over the A66 and M62.

On the M6 through Cumbria, A56, A628 M65 and M66, 3-5 cm of snow is expected.

Some lower routes could also see up to 3cm of snow.

Snow showers can cause poor visibility, difficult driving conditions and traction issues for some vehicles.

Motorists are asked to follow messages on overhead signs and listen to radio updates.
