Traffic queuing down A170 into Scarborough due to snowfall

Snow fall has slowed vehicles down along Stepney Road and the A170 Racecourse Road on the approach to the town with queues back towards Ayton.

North Yorkshire County Council tweeted last night: "Our #gritting crews are treating priority roads overnight and in the morning with snow ploughs fitted where needed. Please take care when out and about and drive to the conditions."

The A170 is one of the county council's primary gritting roads and, along with all major routes which pass through Scarborough, was gritted by 7am.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain and snow which covers Scarborough until 3pm today.

The weather authority says to expect:

- Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers, with possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

- Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

- Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

- Some rural communities could become cut off.
