The Met Office has issued three nearby flood alerts and a flood warning in North Yorkshire due to prolonged heavy downpours.

A flood warning is in place for the River Seven at Marton where flooding is expected.

Water levels are expected to reach 1.9m late Tuesday morning at which point flooding is likely along Marton road. Levels are expected to remain high for several days as further heavy rainfall is forecast until Thursday.

A flood alert is in in place for the catchment of the River Seven and River Rye with residents told to be prepared for flooding.

A flood alert is also in place for the Upper River Derwent and flooding is possible, areas most at risk are low lying land and roads around Low Marishes and Malton.

Water levels are rising due to melting snow and persistent and heavy rain, which is forecast to continue through until early Thursday morning.

Weather forecast for the rest of the week

Today:

Extensive low cloud with outbreaks of rain throughout the day, becoming more persistent and often heavy, particularly over the Pennines and Dales. Light winds at first but turning breezier in the south later. Rather mild. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Tonight:

Often persistent and at times heavy rain will continue throughout the night with extensive low cloud and light winds. Remaining mild with strong southwesterly winds. Minimum temperature 8 °C.

Wednesday:

Further periods of rain throughout Wednesday, with any drier interludes brief and mainly in the east. Rather windy at first but winds steadily easing during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Cold and windy on Thursday and Friday with sunny spells and wintry showers. Perhaps drier and brighter on Saturday with lighter winds. Risk of frosts overnight.
